Oil on sculpted limestone,
wood relief
Cacao is a reflection of Thierry’s journey through art and culture.
Inspired by a transformative visit to the Quai Branly Museum in France, where the strength and bold textures of African Artifacts left a lasting impression, this piece is a study in contrasts.
The cocoa pod-inspired shape echoes the complexities of nature, while the hand-carved limestone and wood panel ground the work in earthiness. Thierry, drawn to the raw, unrefined materials of the artifacts, sought to balance their intensity with softness, creating a dialogue between the two.
“I remember sketching this piece on the plane back to LA, the texture and shape of African art still fresh in my mind. The next day, I began composing with the materials, letting the textures evolve naturally.”
